한국에 PAVA 지부…봉사활동 한-미 공조[LA중앙일보]

재미한인자원봉사자협회(PAVA.회장 강태흥)가 한국 지부를 설립한다.
PAVA는 28일 오후 열린 정기이사회에서 한국 지부 설립안을 인준하고 PAVA코리아 준비위원장에 엄홍길 휴먼재단 이사인 최승형 한국외국어대학교 교수를 임명했다.
글로벌화의 일환으로 한국 지부 설립을 추진해온 PAVA는 지난 15일 한국 엄홍길 휴먼재단과 업무협정(MOU)을 맺으면서 지부 설립에 탄력을 받게 됐다.
강태흥 회장은 "뉴욕과 워싱턴DC 등 동부지역으로의 확장을 준비하던 중 한국에 먼저 지부가 생기게 됐다"며 "한국을 기점으로 중국과 일본 등 아시아와 나아가 유럽까지 전세계에 PAVA의 환경 보호 운동을 퍼뜨리겠다"고 말했다.
이창엽 이사는 "엄홍길 휴먼재단의 엄홍길 상임이사와 관계자들이 지회 설립을 위해 LA를 찾았을 당시 MOU 체결로 미국에서 환경 보호에 앞장서고 있는 PAVA의 활동상에 대해 알게 됐고 깊은 인상을 받으면서 한국 지부 설립에도 적극 동참하게 됐다"고 설명했다.
최승형 위원장은 "PAVA의 이념과 활동은 한국에서도 신선한 바람을 일으킬 것으로 기대된다"며 "한국에 환경 보호의 중요성을 알리고 방학 등을 이용해 한미 양국의 청소년들이 서로 교류하는 등 다양한 활동을 펼칠 계획"이라고 말했다.
PAVA 한국 지부는 고은 시인을 비롯한 인사들을 영입해 올해 안으로 지부를 정식 설립하고 공식 활동에 들어간다는 방침이다.
2001년 설립된 PAVA는 LA강 청소 등 환경 보호와 각종 자원봉사 활동을 펼치고 있다. 산하에 PAVA 주니어 13개 지부를 두고 있으며 5000여명의 청소년 회원이 있다.

Is to preserve the environment and encourage positive relationships with local communities. Environmental awareness and conservation is an urgent task that many communities wish to solve. By working together on projects that preserve and cleanse the earth, we will be able to narrow the gap between different communities and better understand each other.
THE SECOND OF PAVA'S GOALS:
Is to expand volunteerism; not only to the Korean society but to each PAVA member in every community. Through embedding the volunteering spirit, we hope the volunteers will build positive life experiences to pass on the spirit of volunteering.

Is to educate the youth for a more promising future.
PURPOSE OF PAVA ESTABLISHMENT
The UN announced the first year of a new century, the year 2001, as "The World Volunteer Year" to promote volunteerism throughout the globe. "Stand up, volunteers!" the UN encouraged. The compassionate appeal of the UN showed immediate results. During the year 2001, many people developed great interest in altruism. Current news indicates that in response to the appeal; many volunteers from various parts of the world have come forward to practice pure altruism. We have also come forward to engage in the act of volunteering to make a brighter healthier society. The first step in making a brighter healthier society is to cease pollution and cleanse the toxins that destroy nature. About 60% of Americans engage in volunteer services for various reasons such as to fulfill volunteer requirements for schools, to obtain a job, or just for self satisfaction. For such reasons, the United States has become one of the world's most altruistic countries. Now one might ask, "how about us (Korea)?" Fortunately for many years, Korea has been able to receive assistance and support from various countries; until ten years ago, Korea's economy was poor and was unable to sustain itself. For the people of Korea, volunteering or even the thought of assisting others was a luxury that only people of wealthy nations can afford. However many things have changed with the help of caring neighbors and volunteers, Korea has now transformed to a prolific country. Korea is now able to lend a hand to its neighbors and have some time to devote to the benefit of others. In life, the most valuable way of living is to help others. Sharing is the most beautiful virtue of love. Pacific American Volunteer Association (PAVA) would like to share with many who want to participate in volunteer services to help people who need the aid volunteers. PAVA promotes consistence volunteer services for volunteers who wish to render their help. Through the act of volunteering, we can brighten our society for a healthier future.
'청소년들 자원봉사 하며 배운다'···'파바 주니어'친구 네트워킹 효과도
타운을 대표하는 자원봉사 단체 '재미한인자원봉사자회'(회장 강태흥)는 원래 이름보다 짧은 파바(PAVA)로 더 널리 알려져 있다.
또한 파바하면 파바 주니어를 떠올리게 되는데 파바는 사실 파바의 여러 산하 단체중 하나일뿐이다. 하지만 워낙 청소년 조직이 잘 조직화돼 있고 확실하게 봉사를 할 수 있기에 매년 조직이 확대되고 있다.
자원봉사라는게 선진국형 문화활동이기에 이민온 이민자들에게는 낯설은 것도 사실이다. 이런 분야가 수익 사업이 될 수 없는 것도 당연한 일. 그래서 단체를 조직하는 것도 어렵고 운영도 쉽지 않다. 그래서 파바가 한인 커뮤니티의 가장 큰 청소년 봉사조직으로 자리잡은 것이다.
파바 주니어 조직은 우선 15개의 디스트릭으로 나뉘어 지며, 무려 2,000여명을 헤아리는 조직이다보니 방대하기 이를 때 없다. 학생들이 대학입시를 위해서든, 경험을 쌓기 위해서든 간에 자원봉사를 하기 위한 기회를 갖는 것이 어려운 현실에서 파바주니어와 같이 자원봉사를 하려는 누구에게나 문호를 개방하고 있는 단체는 많지 않다.
사실 일반인들이 보기에는 파바가 청소만 하는 단체로 보이기 십상이다. 하지만 파바는 주류사회의 여러 봉사활동과도 연결이 돼있다. 또한 사물놀이를 배워서 위문 행사를 나서는 문화 봉사활동도 함께 하고 있다.또한 봉사와 문화 교류를 통해 지부 회원들끼리 더욱 친밀감을 가지고 공동체 활동을 통해 강화된 리더십을 배울 수 있다는 게 파바의 가장 중요한 강점이다.
